Will you be able to call home? - Yes, I will have a satellite phone, recharged by solar power, so I can call anyone, limited only by the size of the phone bill. What do you eat? - As many calories as possible. Being limited by weight, I aim to eat around 7,000 calories a day but I will probably burn nearer 9,000, so I will lose weight. Breakfast is porridge, raisins, sugar, powdered milk and hot chocolate. During the day (too cold to stop for lunch for more than 10 mins) I will graze on nuts, salami and chocolate, and for dinner I have a BIG rice, potato or pasta based freeze-dried meal – which does taste good – and hot chocolate. Everything, morning and evening is covered in as much melted butter as I can stand in order to bump up the calorie intake. Is it daylight the whole time? -Yes, in fact the sun just revolves around the sky. As a result, I don’t really need to stick to normal time and, if it suits, I may end up with 26 or 27-hour days to make the most efficient speed. How do you navigate? - If the sun’s visible, I will steer by the sun. In theory it’s easy, as you know it moves 15° every hour and my shadow will be pointing exactly due south at 12.00 p.m. local time (if I can work out when local time is!). Otherwise, I have a compass, which needs major adjustment for the fact that magnetic South is a long way away from the South Pole, and I can check my position at the end of each day on a GPS.
